The Altis Police Department’s Marine Unit is one of the most underutilized police divisions in the department, and the country. On Thursday however, their problems came to a head.

It began with a 911 call, a man reported his grey SUV stolen from Sydney Market. Police responded to the vehicle’s last known location rather quickly, but soon got confused. As it turns out, detectives from the police department use the exact same vehicles as everyday civilians. This posed a problem because the vehicle they were looking for was the exact same as a police car. After several hours, police caught up with the stolen vehicle by the large Bondi Beach near Sydney. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled into the water. One man had a diving suit on already, the other in shorts and a t-shirt. The man wearing the t-shirt was not a good swimmer, and drowned. The marine unit was deployed from nearby to catch the diving suit suspect. This is where things go horribly wrong.

Paramedics were called to try and resussitate the drowning man. However, the medics went into the water with all their gear on, they were not search and rescue, The medic soon found himself in the middle of the bay needing a rescue. The police boat had to then divert their attention to the medic while the suspect diver continued swimming out to sea. The police believed the diver had gone around the rocks towards the Sydney boat shop. As it turned out, he didnt. Other police were on the shore with binoculars with view of the fleeing man but the police boat continued round the bend for whatever reason. The driver of the boat cut too close to the rocks and destroyed the boat, and knocked several people unconcious and killing two. The police had now only one officer on the rocks with binoculars in a frenzy. The officer was so focused on where the diver was that he missed the officers and other people on the boat crashing. It was actually AAN reporter Daxon Thill who had to tell the officers that there were people unconcious, just meters from his perch on the rocks.

Just after the police boat crash, a civilian came around from the Sydney boat shops and proceeded to the last known location of the diver. At first it wasnt clear if the samaritan was trying to catch the man or help him get away. Turns out, he was in fact trying to help him get away. That didnt turn out so well as the inexperienced boat driver made a tight turn, accidently decappitating the diver. The boat driver fled into the open sea and remains at large. Local residents in the area say they are unconfident with the police’s ability to protect and serve on the water.
