    Details:

    Server side feature toggle:

    Part of our investigations to find the cause of the servers instability requires disabling features. We have added a bunch of server side toggles so we can disable various features as we need to without releasing a new mission update. Most of the features aren’t critical to game play, the biggest of them all is housing which we have already tested.

     

    House crates bug:

    Specifically the bug where you sell one house and all crates from all your houses vanish, that’s fixed now.

  3. Thank you to everyone who was online last night while we ran a few old builds. Thanks to the number of players online we were able to confirm what direction we should be moving in with these old builds.

     

    We would greatly appreciate it if you could all join us again tonight as we test a few more builds. I personally would like to have them all tested and out of the way tonight but that depends on how many players we have on. Same as last night, bank accounts will be forced to 50mil minimum, so take the time do play around with things you may not normally get to have fun with and enjoy yourself.

     

    All old build missions are available for manual install before we put them on the server tonight. I recommend downloading 46r, 47r, 48r and 49r from the old builds folder in google drive. Tutorial and download link available here:

    • We would appreciate it if everyone played as it would end our testing sooner.

    Details:

    Progress bar UI:

    The progress bar now loads as a menu instead of an overlay to prevent moving around while performing an action. You can still use VOIP while the progress bar is open, and you press escape to abort.

     

    Animations:

    We recently ran a test with animations which resulted in less desync/lag. With server stability in mind we decided it would be best to remove some animations & change others. The generic action & repair vehicle animations were replaced with crouch (used when the progress bar is open). Three of the six stages of ‘spasm’ animation (used in tazer/knock down/drug overdose scripts) were removed. Shift 3, 4, 5 & 6 animations were removed (keeping wave and piss). The bend down ‘pickup’ animation was replaced with the arma 3 default pickup animation. The method of execution for the remaining animations also changed to keep JIP clients from receiving old animation data on join.

  8. FAQ


    How long will the server be running old missions?

    It will be on and off over the next few days at least, we would like to keep time on the old missions as brief as possible. This is a visual representation of how this testing phase is going to go:

    Note: the server will go back to current build during the day as we can't properly test stability during off-peak time.

     

    Why have I lost... (money/vehicles/gear/etc)?

    To ensure we don't corrupt any data, all old builds will run off a temporary database which is using data saved at 9/10pm last night (18/04/2017). The server will still use the main database when running the current build, so any progress made after that point is not lost.

     

    What is the point in playing if none of my progress will save?

    Use this time to take risks and do things you wouldn't normally do, have a bit more fun than usual. Plus you would be helping us finish these tests sooner.

     

    Why should I play while the server is running an old build?

    We need as many people as possible playing to finish these tests quickly. We cannot test mission stability on the development server as the cause of the crashes is not known and therefore we don't know how to reproduce them. As frustrating as it is we have to run these tests on the main server because it will ensure the tests are run under normal conditions and therefore will definitely prove what our last stable build is.

     

    Can you add new features to the old builds to make it easier?

    No. The entire purpose behind running old builds is to find out where along our development timeline we messed up. If we add newer features to the old builds we are not testing old builds at all, and therefore wasting everyone's time.

     

    How do I know if the server is on an old build?

    There will be an r at the end of the version in the server name (eg: v5.0r) and when you load in there is a pop up stating that old build tests are in progress.

     

    How will this help you stop server crashes?

    If we can find the last stable build, we can look at what changed after it. By knowing exactly where we went wrong, we can reverse it in our current build and hopefully stop the crashes.

     

    How is this better than what you were doing before?

    What we were doing before obviously wasn't working. Our original approach was to try and fix/improve anything that had potential to be the cause. This new approach is about finding the point in time where we went wrong and looking at those changes specifically, thus narrowing down all possible causes & being able to see exactly what changed in the code.

     

    Have the rules changed too?

    No.

    Changed various animations:

    For a while now the mission has been loaded with all different kinds of animations. This update cuts it down to just a few to test if animations are responsible for our stability issues. You will notice some actions now share animations (eg: surrendering & restraining), this is due to the default altis life animations not being a viable replacement for this test due to stability issues of their own.

    Details:

    This update is a test:

    This update has been released as a trial in attempt to resolve mass kicks and freezes by drastically lowering the number of objects on the map. If the tests are unsuccessful we will most likely revert to the previous build. We are trying this now as it is the only part of the mission to remain untouched during the mission cleanup performed a little while back. We are hoping this test will prove if the high number of map objects is responsible for the crashes.

     

    Jail:

    The jail alone contains 939 objects. In this update we have relocated and drastically downsized the jail in order to give this test the best chance for success. The new jail does everything the old one did, and also has a billboard to remember the spectacular jail it has replaced.

     

    Oil rigs:

    All 3 oil rigs combined account for 1008 objects in the mission. Again we have downsized the oil rigs to just a few objects each with the hope that the server may perform better, and added a billboard to remember the old oil rigs.

     

    Disabled Zeus:

    Zeus modules have been temporarily disabled while we run this test.

  14. Minigames Update #2.1

    Details:

    New spawn system:

    Anyone who has played minigames knows the spawns are questionable to say the least. Allow me to explain how the spawn system currently works and then show how this new one is different.

     

    The current spawn system uses fixed positions generated by a script. These positions are split up between 5 circles around the combat zone. On respawn your client picks a random respawn point where no one is within 50m of it. Each map has between 40 and 60 spawns depending on how many bad positions were generated (inside rocks, under buildings, etc). This issue with this is players either spawn too close together or too far away.

     

    Here is a picture of the current spawns in Kavala:

    The new spawn system uses buildings instead of fixed positions, allowing players to spawn in cover and greatly increasing the number of available spawns. The only condition in this spawn system is there cannot be a player already in the building. The system also changes how spawns are selected to keep you near the battle. Instead of picking any building inside the zone, it first searches all buildings within half the combat zones full size in a random order, if it doesn’t find a good spawn it will then search all buildings over half the combat zones full size in order of how close they are to the center of the zone.

     

    Here is a picture of the new spawns in Kavala (red = within ½ combat zone size, green = outside ½ combat zone size):

    The old spawn system has been modified to mimic the new spawn systems methods with the fixed positions as it is required on maps like “Federal Reserve” where there aren’t that many buildings. The old spawn system is also used on Tanoa as there are not as many buildings on most maps so the fixed positions are the better option.

    Details:

    Full mission obfuscation:

    In Arma, obfuscation is used to protect a mission file from thieves. The form of obfuscation we use also allows encryption to protect all scripts inside. The encryption takes no time at all for your game to read so you won’t notice any extended loading period. We have disabled the previous form of encryption on hidden scripts (introduced v5.8.1393) as this obfuscation method protects those scripts too.

    Yea, i hear this a lot which confuses me cause the guns do go in an order, largest to smallest. The idea was you would have an easy start and a hard finish instead of the other way around.

    Do you mean just no minimap at all or the option to hide it? Because you can hide all parts of the ui if they are in ur way. The idea for the minimap was to show enemy blips and stop camping.

     

    Not saying no to either suggestion, just explaining the thought process behind the way they are now.

    Script Encryption:

    Recently a ‘developer’ took some of our scripts without asking for permission. The scripts that were taken are not all that game changing, but regardless it has damaged the trust we had in ‘developers’ to ask first :( As a result, all valuable scripts made by Strayagaming have been encrypted and hidden from view. This will not impact client or server performance in any way.
