    I think it has been discussed, not sure what the outcome was tho.

     

    personally I'm not sure its worth it. They aren't the cheapest servers to host ($160ish a month for 100slots), it would be on a shared host (on a dedicated server that has loads of other game servers on it) and there is no reason for players to choose our server over the next one cause they all the same.

     

    At least thats how i think it all goes, I know some communities have 'custom' builds but I'm not sure how they go about getting those.

    Finished headless client trial:

    Last week we implemented a headless client as a trial to see how it would impact server performance. Despite server crashes still happening, overall performance has improved and therefore we will continue to use the headless client.

    Hello,

     

    I just want to give a short sitrep on what the go is with the Altis Life server freezing/crashing as often as it does.

     

    What we know:

    • From what we have recorded over the last few days, the server freezes between 20 and 80 players.
    • It involves failing to send network messages and swift build up of allocated memory.
    • Sometimes (although very rarely) it can recover from a freeze, however it will usually crash for using up all allocated resources.

     

    What we have tried so far:

    • Completely reworked most network based ingame systems to lower the number of messages sent as much as possible (wanted list, gangs and auction house just to name a few).
    • Added support and started using a headless client. The headless client takes a load off the server by doing all database related tasks and runs server based processes (eg: cleanup loop, missions, etc). By doing this we ensure the server can focus on doing what it needs do, instead of spending time on all the things we add on top.
    • Trialed allowing extra memory to be used by the server, but it just made the server take longer to crash after it froze.
    • Trialed custom memory allocators. The crashes were still happening so we reverted back to the original malloc.
    • Running performance server binaries. This means we are a step above the main branch server executable with loads of stability improvements and memory leak fixes, while still remaining playable by main branch clients.

     

    What our options are from here:

    • Continue to rework more systems (eg: house crates, dropped items, etc) until we have reworked everything.
    • Sit tight until 64-bit is released and hope it fixes all our problems.
    • Move the server onto a clean host and experiment with that to see if things change.

     

    Something you could do while we work this out is update your arma 3 client to the latest performance binary. It may not help at all however if we all try to keep as up to date as possible it could make a difference. Simply download the performance client zip, drag the exe out of the zip, rename it to arma3.exe and replace the arma3.exe in your arma 3 directory with it. The binaries linked above are released by dwarden, a developer at Bohemia Interactive.

     

    I understand this is frustrating for everyone who is involved with Altis Life, but if we can all be patient and soldier on for a little bit longer, we will have this fixed up.

    Every update brings in new optimizations. You can get some of those optimizations long before the next stable release if you keep up with dwardens perf binary thread on the BI forums. The game is far more optimized now than it was on release, but 64bit obviously hasn't been seen as a worthwhile way to spend their time up till mid-late last year.

    This update:

    As said above this update introduces support for a headless client. The headless client is designed to take stress off the server by doing things the server would normally do (eg: database queries). Our hope is this will improve server performance and maybe even stop the server from freezing. Please keep in mind this updates is released as a trial, so there may be a mistake here or there. What is most important during this trial is how the server performs now that there is a weight off its shoulders.

    Details:

    Terrain smoothing options:

    By default we remove all grass to improve fps. It turns out the way we do it is actually terrain smoothing,. This means only the land around you is in its actual form, while land further away from you is flattened out making it easier on the game. This results in objects that appear to be floating at a long distance, particularly over hill tops. We have added 3 options to the settings menu so you can alter these settings. The options range from our default (smooth) to the highest detail arma will allow (bumpy). Hop in game and have a read of the description for each option to choose what is best for you.

    Thanks to @Leopard for the time and effort he has put into making these skins. They're divided up between 12 new strider skins, 4 new SUV skins and 3 new Zamak skins. All skins are available for level 3 donators.

     

    Debug logging for gangs:

    Players have been experiencing issues when relogging where they aren’t placed back in their gang. Debug logging has been added client side so if this happens to you and you have logs enabled, send them to @Connor. for analysis.

    Failing to add crew to UAV:

    The server should add crew automatically now. I also noticed it only lets you fully control the UAV if it’s unlocked. This frustrated me as I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why I couldn’t fly it. As a result, the UAV is now unlocked by default.

     

    Unable to join your gang if you relog:

    This is a difficult thing to test as it only seems to occur when there is a large number of players online. I will continue to work on improving gangs once I have more info on how the bugs are occurring.

    Details:

    Persistent gangs:

    Despite the last changelog stating the new gang system was experimental, so many of you complained that it wasn’t persistent. This week I have set up persistence, and hopefully it will work properly.

     

    Save email messages:

    This feature can be found on the messenger UI. If there is a message you send often, save it! Then next time you need it, just select it from the dropdown and send!

     

    Server wide discounts:

    All vehicle, weapon, clothing and virtual item stores can have a discount enabled with the flick of a switch. More info here.

     

    Map marker controls:

    If the map is too cluttered for your liking, you can now fix it. Create a marker group to change the size and opacity of all the markers you add to it. To reset back to default, delete all groups and relog.

     

    Fishing zones:

    Struggling to find fish in the sea? Head on out to a fishing zone and find all the fish you’ll ever need! Yes you can catch fish anywhere, but your odds are significantly raised if you’re inside a fishing zone.

     

    Get in/out of jail for cops:

    Walk up to the wall which backs onto the ATM and you will have a scroll wheel to enter the jail, stand near the ATM and you will have a scroll wheel to exit… simple :)

     

    Kajman to rebel store:

    I felt it was worth noting down, it does not have ammo.

     

    StrayaAir skins:

    Two StrayaAir Caesar skins have been added to the donator store for  level 3+.

     

    Nyan cat skins:

    Three Nyan cat skins have been added to the donator store for level 2+. One skin each for the SUV, Hatchback (normal and sport), and Strider.

     

    Various anticheat measures:

    No this does not mean we are unhackable, just means some methods are blocked.

     

    New map shade toggle:

    The default map shade has changed to give a different feel to the map. If you like your maps a little more ordinary, plain and boring you can disable the change in your settings menu.

     

    Fixed players joining random groups:

    The reason I say hopefully is because Arma seems to be unpredictable when it comes to groups. The code was written to put the player in an empty group when they joined, however sometimes they would end up in a group with players already in it. I have rewritten the init to try and prevent this but I can not promise that it will resolve the issue.
